JUDGE RULES IN FAVOUR OF SANUSI ...orders Nigeria to pay him 50 Million Naira as damages and return his passport. A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the Federal Government to pay Suspended CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi the sum of $300,000 ( N50 Million) as damages for seizing his passport without due process. Judge Ibrahim Buba, who ruled in favour of the Plaintiff, Sanusi, said the actions of the Directorate of State Services (DSS) “deserve condemnation” and ordered it to return Sanusi’s passport immediately. The DSS “has no power to seize the passport of any citizen” without due process, Buba added. The Defence attorneys for the SSS, said Sanusi's passport was seized because they had evidence he was financing terrorism in Nigeria. But the Plaintiff's Counsel, said the allegation was an "Afterthought" by the Federal Government and he wasn't charged with any crime involving terrorism. The Judge added that, the SSS should make a public apology to the plaintiff for violating her rights to freedom of movement. What do you think of this ruling? Is the Judge right to rule in favour of Sanusi? Could the verdict be influenced because the court was sitting in Lagos, the home of the All Progressive Congress (APC)? Do you think the Nigerian Government violated Sanusi’s right when they seized his passport?
