A Nigerian surgeon resident in the United Kingdom is facing prosecution after a pregnant woman had an ovary removed instead of her appendix. Babatunde Coker was meant to supervise inexperienced trainee doctor, Yahya Al-Abed during the surgery at Queen’s Hospital in Romford, Essex but he didn’t. Dr. Al-Abed admitted to making a number of mistakes during the operation which included removing the healthy right ovary of 32-year-old Maria De Jesus leading to a miscarriage and her eventual death. Coker, a senior surgical consultant, is accused of negligence for failing to either conduct the surgery himself or supervise the operation.
